Music | Female singer-songwriters №15: Erykah Badu

Ery-“can do no wrong”. Like any artist, her art morphs but “the essence is the same”. Sky high head wraps, major afro wigs, bleach blonde do’s – no matter, she is always stylish, futuristic and supportive, hell, very protective, of black culture. A fine selector, too. “… love it or learn it.” I like this earth mama. She may have been publicly born in a waft of burning incense – “On & On” – floating on the good vibes “Didn’t Cha Know”, but she calls it like it is. She tells you when to call “Tyron” to help you get your shit – oh boyfriend you; she warns you about all them bags getting in your way – oh “Bag Lady” girlfriend you; she wonders about the “Other Side of the Game” and its “Danger”. And still a “Honey”. Just follow the links. Better still - get the albums. And have fun.

Food | Pizzeria in Shanghai

“As of May 2012, the city of Pudong in Shanghai, China has been going Italian crazy. The cause is made up of 5 simple letters that have been making everyone drool with just the hearing of the name; MATTO - meaning crazy mad or wild. An Italian restaurant that has made every resident in Shanghai gladly put down their chopsticks for the feeling of the pizza dough in hand.” – from yatzer

Beauty | Sleep for your hair

From GryuLich
Skipping on zzz’s makes it brittle and thin, they say. They also say, if you get to bed by 10pm, you'll reap the benefit of growth hormones at their peak—these powerhouse neurochemicals build new cells and repair damaged ones, including those in hair follicles. Deprive yourself of sleep and the body churns out cortisol, a stress hormone that interferes with cell functioning, wreaking havoc on your hair.

At Home | When that orchid spike stops blooming

Photo ©MAK @ M / M Details
I have had this conundrum before. What to do when that orchid loses all its beautiful flowers and no more new ones seem to be coming? Keep on taking care of it, I heard. Trim the spike, I heard. Trim? How? Where?

History repeats and I am doing a bit of homework. American Orchid Society has this nifty video to help out.
In the nutshell:
  1. Leave two nodes behind if you don’t want to cut the spike at its base.
  2. Cut about ½ inch above the second node with sterile cutting tool.
  3. Treat the cut area with fungicide (some other options I read about are: sealing the cut with melted candle wax or cinnamon powder).
  4. Become patient. Take care of the orchid as if though the blooms were still there, and if genetically possible, in 2 to 4 months the reward will come.
Inhale. Let’s see.

Interesting Couple | Sofia Coppola & Thomas Mars

Hello hip, cultured, suave, creative! Yes, a Hollywood princess and a rocker are in the house – sorry, in a chic, bobo, mod pad – yes, such a place would be well suited for these two and their little ‘dahlings’. But honestly, even though “Somewhere” was, well… was, Sofia and Thomas have an inspiring ability to set the mood and subliminally communicate.
