Random thoughts. Random remembrances. Yes, what was that song? “Northern.” “Soul.” “Northern Soul”? Can hear it. Can see putting the CD in a player. The light in the room was… yes, there were two possible locations with that light. Actually, just one. So the year must’ve been 1996? No. Later. 1997? Breathing. Something to do with breathing… Exhale? Swan? A name “Rae”? What was the other one? “Christian”?

What ever happened to…? Named after a basketball player active in the 60s, they quietly reactivated in 2011. Matthew Perpetua wrote about it in February 2012. Now, that is definitely a quiet reunion – 2011 and we hear about it in big music press in 2012?! Rockers! In true fashion of current times, and to be honest very much in line with the ethos they have always exuded, Luscious Jackson released their new single “Are you ready?” via internet and bypassed dealing with a music label. Very luscious! This is how I got hooked:

Last Week of Summer № 1 ● Music | Cibo Matto Sugar Water

According to the calendar, September 22^nd is the first day of autumn north of the equator,

but to all intents and purposes, last week of August is the last week of summer.

If the academic year hasn’t started for you already, by September 1^st there will be no mistaking that summer play is over –

it’s school time. New classes. New teachers. New students. It’s just different.

If you work at a place where it’s all about the Quarters and Fiscal Years, September 1^st marks another change.

If you live north of the ~45-degree latitude, the weather would typically start to change in an unmistakable way.

It might start slowly. Or not.

So here is № 1 for the last week of summer.  A week of something-somethings to ease into the season change.

In Italian, it is crazy food, but the ingredients were two New York City-based Japanese expatriates – Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori (the latter was the first voice of Gorillaz’ Noodle). No longer together, but Yuka was nicely Zen at the time of disbanding –

“Cibo Matto broke up, because it was time. We felt the need to move to the next step. It was a healthy decision, though it was sad at the same time. Things just need to grow out of things sometimes.”

Booze | A ray of sunshine

Lemon juice is like crisp rays of sunshine. Tart sunshine. Now that summer has announced itself early in this part of the world (no more teasing with those few days here and there followed by cool nights, then more cool days), it's time to find lemons. Perfectly squeezed lemons. Sweetened lemons. Bottled lemons. Steeped in alcohol lemons. Limoncello! This Italian liqueur hails from Southern Italy, and is produced and maybe even originates from the Gulf of Naples, Sorrentine Peninsula, Amalfi coast, Procida islands, Ischia, Capri, Sicily, Sardinia, or Maltese island of Gozo or elsewhere - who knows - I'll let them fight it out. What I do know is that it looks good, is crisp but sweet underneath it all, and makes me smile. Cue in "Matrimonio all'italiana", "Ieri, oggi, domani", "8 ½" ... Buona Sera Tutti!
